And that leads the taxman to the cheats, who keep tens of millions of dollars annually out of the federal coffers that law-abiding citizens fill

Bitter exes. Jealous neighbours. Scofflaws who aren’t nearly as smart as they believe. Targeted prosecutions. And, for those convicted, a good old public shaming.

It’s officially called the informants leads program. As Bell notes its “otherwise known as the snitch line” and more than jilted lovers dial it up. “No one is above the law, and individuals or businesses that intentionally ignore Canada’s tax laws can face serious consequences, including reassessments, the imposition of civil penalties and criminal tax investigations and prosecutions resulting in the imposition of court fines and jail time,” a spokesperson for the CRA wrote in an email.

One way the CRA raises awareness about the tax evasion is by publishing an online list of all cases, by province, where a taxpayer was convicted in court for tax evasion. It may seem harsh, and it’s certainly embarrassing, but Cestnick says it serves as a warning to others thinking of cheating on their taxes.

Beyond general deterrence, Cestnick says there may be other reasons for making the McClay trucking firm’s conviction public.
