The provincial Liberals — like the Python Norwegian Blue parrot — have been nailed “stone dead” to the perch for the last quarter century.
In the first provincial election in December 1905, Walter Scott, a former Liberal MP and premier-designate, nicely captured the unbridled optimism for Saskatchewan’s future with the campaign slogan “Peace, Progress, and Prosperity.”
Both premiers Charles Dunning and Jimmy Gardiner stepped down to join the federal cabinets of Liberal Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. King, meanwhile, represented the riding of Prince Albert from 1926 to 1945 — a fact that has been largely forgotten. By the 1970s, Saskatchewan Liberal fortunes nosedived because of the resurgence of the Progressive Conservatives and the collapse of the federal Liberal vote on the prairies because of Pierre Trudeau’s focus on Quebec and bilingualism.
The right-of centre SP, created as the counterpoint to the New Democrats, Saskatchewan’s second “natural governing” party, has dominated provincial politics since 2007. Those Liberals who remained true to the party found themselves caught in the middle between the warring SP and NDP with mortal consequences: few votes and no seats.Article content
Apparently gone are the days when policy mattered. And who needs a coherent party platform? There’s also a certain irony at play here., but Walter’s political pronouncements sound like Trudeau’s “sunny ways” approach in 2015.
