Strictly Come Dancing winner Bill Bailey is taking on new skills in his latest Sky Arts show - and the comedian hopes that his crafts-loving dad will be tuning into watch
Artist, musician, comedian and, of course, Strictly Come Dancing winner – Bill Bailey is a man of many talents. And in a new series, Master Crafters: The Next Generation, he adds to his skills when he tries out three heritage crafts alongside nine talented crafters taking classes in their chosen fields of stained glass work, wood carving and silversmithing.
In each episode, three crafters are shown new skills and techniques from a skilled master crafter, beginning with John Reyntiens, who specialises in stained glass and restored the fire-damaged windows at Windsor Castle and the clock faces of the Elizabeth Tower . “John is a great character,” Bill says.
The young crafters were also commissioned to create a piece of art that will sit in the gardens of Highgrove House, the summer residence of King Charles III, which meant Bill got to visit the stately home himself and have a rummage. “Well, I didn’t get to rummage,” laughs Bill. "It’s not quite what you expect from a public garden – I expected something like Versailles, something very formal. It’s not that at all. There’s a wildflower meadow, there’s bees, the path is all a bit wonky, the weeds come in a bit. King Charles wanted it to be much more in keeping with nature. It’s very natural looking, and the better for it, I think.”
