The celebration of the establishment of CSA's professional women's league has been tempered by the Proteas' reported reservations over head coach Hilton Moreeng's contract being extended.
Senior players are understood to crave fresh input after exposure to several top T20 leagues worldwide, but CSA renewed Moreeng's deal in the spirit of"fairness" to a new appointee.
His position had come under the spotlight due to his contract expiring on June 30, only for CSA to renew it until December 31. The move prompted several senior players in the squad to express their reservations on paper. "The landscape has changed. The country has become professional, but regarding the changeroom being divided, it's not something that has happened.
"Extended conversations have happened. We had a camp. We could speak and find out what the actual challenges are," said Moreeng. However, the hasty rejigging associated with that decision meant that the Proteas needed to speedily find a replacement, especially after Chloe Tryon, the official vice-captain, requested a leave of absence for the Pakistan series.
