The number of Canadians in poverty is declining rapidly thanks to a strong labour market and an increase in child benefits, a new report from Statistics Canada says — a bit of good news for a Liberal government increasingly mired in controversy.
Sun/Postmedia Network The report organizes incomes into “deciles,” or blocks of 10 equal-sized groups, and the distribution between those groups makes up the income inequality numbers. Anyone making $19,100 in after-tax incomes was in the lowest 10 per cent of incomes in 2017.The top 10 per cent of incomes accounted for about 23 per cent of total after-tax income in Canada in 2017, while the bottom 40 per cent accounted for about 20 per cent.
