The US Supreme Court recognised for the first time a presidential immunity from prosecution.
US President Joe Biden delivers remarks on the Supreme Court's immunity ruling at the Cross Hall of the White House in Washington, DC on July 1, 2024.
The US Supreme Court found on July 1 that Trump cannot be prosecuted for any actions that were within his constitutional powers as president, but can be for private acts, in a landmark ruling recognising for the first time any form of presidential immunity from prosecution. After he stumbled over his words on the Atlanta debate stage, his remarks and comportment will be scrutinised for signs that he is up to the job of running for re-election and of governing the country for four more years.
“I concur with Justice Sotomayor’s dissent today,” he added. “So should the American people dissent. I dissent. May God bless you all. May God help preserve our democracy,” Mr Biden said in closing.
