Parents are sounding the alarm over a crisis in dozens of classrooms throughout elementary schools in Seattle Public Schools.
Washington’s Paramount Duty told KOMO that as many as 40 schools will lose teachers or have students moved to different classrooms because of a district management mistake in class size calculations. KOMO asked the district to explain this predicament and is waiting for an answer.Karen Hartman said that her daughter and her friend cried for hours after being told they have to change classrooms at Adams Elementary School. The girls were so upset they distributed a letter they called “Adams News.
“All Adams students in Mrs. Windus’ 3rd grade class got surprising news that the class will be split up!" the letter said. "Kids might be without friends in their new classes.”Hartman said her daughter will now be one of eight third graders in a classroom with 17 second graders. The girls also took their news bulletin to lunch and had 45 students sign a petition for their teacher to stay.
One elementary school teacher told KOMO she feels as though the district is being sneaky about it all, since she said there’s been no communication with teachers through email or memos. It has all been verbal, she said. Washington’s Paramount Duty is rallying parents and students to attend Wednesday night's school board meeting at 4:15 p.m. Parents plan to share stories about how this disruption in their children’s schools is affecting their students and to urge the district to correct its mistakes.
