President JoeBiden plans to host a group of state governors at the White House on Friday to discuss extending abortion access to women across the country a week after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
The administration plans to announce the meeting following Biden's departure from Madrid, Spain, later on Thursday, according to Axios. White House officials declined to give additional information on the meeting by press time. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe on Friday in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, more than half of all states moved to limit abortion availability in some capacity. As of Thursday, only 16 states explicitly guarantee abortion.
Despite the Supreme Court's ruling, roughly 61% of voters believe abortion should be protected in"most cases," according to a recent poll conducted by Pew Research Center. Biden's real options for providing abortion remain extremely limited. Allies say he is"desperately" holding out hope Congress passes a bill codifying Roe, but even some Democratic officials view that as nearly impossible ahead of the midterm elections.
"It's absolutely paramount voters put Roe on the ballot this year," one Democratic official told the Washington Examiner."From voting rights to clean energy, the current Congress has made it clear they're incapable of acting on the issues voters care about, and now women's lives are literally at stake. Something needs to be done.
"We stand ready to work with other arms of the federal government that seek to use their lawful authorities to protect and preserve access to reproductive care," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement."In particular, the FDA has approved the use of the medication mifepristone. States may not ban mifepristone based on disagreement with the FDA’s expert judgment about its safety and efficacy.
