U.S. President Joe Biden and House Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy will meet to discuss the debt ceiling on Monday, after a “productive” phone call as the president headed back to Washington, the two sides on Sunday.

McCarthy’s comments on Sunday appeared more positive than the increasingly heated rhetoric in recent days, as both sides reverted to calling the other’s position extremist and talks stalled.

The president later tweeted that he would not agree to a deal that protected “Big Oil” subsidies and “wealthy tax cheats” while putting healthcare and food assistance at risk for millions of Americans. After Sunday’s call, McCarthy said while there was still no final deal, there was an understanding to get negotiators on both sides back together before the two leaders met: “There’s no agreement. We’re still apart.”

He explained why he withdrew from contesting for the Joburg mayor position as he could not assure his coalition partners on what they wanted him to stand for and how he changed support for former Joburg mayor Thapelo Amad as he was “faced with facts”. He says the PA is open to coalition with any political party next year as it wants power like any other party, and says one of the options next year after elections include the PA deciding who will be president. Mnangagwa was speaking during the high-level debt resolution forum held on May 15, 2023, in the capital Harare. The forum was also addressed by the President of the African Development Bank Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, and the facilitator of the high-level dialogues, former President of Mozambique Joaquim Chissano. It was attended by government officials, development partners, private sector, former farm owners and civil society organizations. Chissano said the crisis in Zimbabwe is having "terrible consequences" for the whole of Southern Africa by delaying the building of roads, railways and power lines. Adesina said the AfDB is collaborating with the government of Zimbabwe on land reform and compensation in order to create cutting-edge financial tools and structures that can be used utilized to mobilise U.S.$3.5 billion for compensation. He issued a warning against future delays that would damage trust and confidence. So timing, responsiveness, and financial sustainability all matter, he explained.
