Bheki Mtolo issues public apology to Nehawu following threats of legal action

The controversial ANC KwaZulu-Natal chairperson, Bheki Mtolo , has finally apologised to the National Education Health and Allied Workers' Union following a directive from the ANC's national leadership. This apology comes after Mtolo accused the union’s members of being responsible for poor service delivery in key departments, including home affairs, labour, social development and emergency services.

Mtolo had made these remarks at a gathering in Kokstad on 20 July 2024, in remembrance of the late Nelson Mandela, which led Nehawu to initiate legal proceedings against him. "The meeting recognised that Comrade Mtolo’s remarks were unfortunate, and the platform chosen to air such views fuelled tensions rather than fostering constructive political engagement within the alliance. We, therefore, resolved that Comrade Mtolo will issue an unconditional apology to Nehawu and retract the unfortunate remarks he made.

Cosatu in the province had supported the decision to pursue legal action against Mtolo and condemned his comments, arguing that the statements not only defamed union members but also posed a risk of inciting physical harm against them. The congress described Mtolo’s assertions as"provocative," warning of the potential for increased tensions and conflicts within the public service sector.
