A look into the work of Saskatoon\u0027s fire investigators and how they determine the cause of fires and try to prevent future ones.
Saskatoon Fire Department fire marshal Brian Conway quickly decides against walking around the perimeter after the wind ripped a spiralled shard of fascia to the ground. Instead, at the front of the house, he walks over to a cultured-stone column that connects to the overhanging roof at the front of the house.
Conway, a member of the department’s prevention and investigations division, reminds people to dispose of cigarettes and other smoking materials in non-combustible containers that have lids and are filled with sand or water. “ that investigative part that’s really enjoyable,” he says, as he drove the heavy-duty fire inspection van to the site of the burnt-out Hampton Village house.
They’ll enter a scene once it’s safe, donning protective gear to take photographs and document the scene. The investigators look at how well the building is maintained, if there were working smoke alarms, if there are flammable materials that feed a fire, an ignition source, hot spots and burn patterns.
A laptop is one of the biggest innovations, Conway says. Investigators can check anything from an incident commander’s notes to whether an appliance has been recalled. There are four possible conclusions for a fire’s cause: natural , accidental , intentional/suspicious/incendiary, or undetermined .Article content
