SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County jail inmate died in his cell early Thursday morning, the sheriff’s office said. Rogelio Hernandez, 67, may have suffered from a medical episode before sheriff’s deputies found him unresponsive in his cell just after 2:30 a.m. The deputy who found Hernandez began performing lifesaving measures until medical staff arrived. Hernandez was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later.The Bexar County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
In accordance with protocol, the Criminal Investigations Division, Internal Affairs and Public Integrity Unit are conducting investigations into the death. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said it appears that its policies and procedures were followed while the unit officer conducted cell checks.
