Residents from Beverly and Morgan Park expressed outrage over what they described as alarming numbers of trees being removed from midways located between sidewalks and streets.

Annie Duggan and Jessie Carroll exchange contact information at a meeting hosted by the Beverly Area Planning Association to stop trees being cut down by the Chicago Department of Streets & Sanitation.

Children stand on a large tree stump at 102nd near Leavitt. Two other trees of similar size were taken down in front of the same home in Beverly. But at last week’s meeting of what the association calls its Save the Trees campaign, Viero and others expressed dissatisfaction with his explanations. Lisa Vinci, of Beverly, identifies herself as “a lover of native plants and trees.” She said she decided to get involved after seeing an unusual number of stumps on streets otherwise populated by tall oaks, maples, elms, sycamores, hickories, basswoods, hackberries and other native trees and nonnative ginkgo.

“We love it here because of the trees,” Carroll said. “It’s like a forest, really lovely.” But after noticing the trees coming down, she said, “I found myself counting stumps with 127 tree rings!”Her remark triggered speculation about the historic significance of certain older trees and possibility of obtaining protective historic status.
