Finally, many of these smaller crossovers are available with a full-time all-wheel-drive system. The traction is always ready to roll and without forcing the driver to think about when to engage it. Many traditional truck-based SUVs use a part-time system. Yes, many also feature a low-range transfer case, which is great when off-road, but having to manually switch between two- and four-wheel drive when the road gets slippery is a royal pain.
Within the full-time all-wheel-drive category there are two main types — reactive and proactive. In the subcompact and compact segments, the reactive system usually drives the front wheels until these wheels slip. This traction loss initiates the transfer of power to the rear wheels to help regain grip. The proactive system “looks” for a potential loss of traction. When the possibility arises, the system begins to engage all-wheel-drive ahead of the slippage occurring.
The beauty is both systems add no-brainer functionality and ability to the vehicle — both systems work very well in an urban environment. However, if you venture beyond a groomed city street the proactive system has an edge in terms of overall ability. The downside is a proactive system tends to be more expensive. The
offers both system types — the lower models use a reactive system; the higher-end units like the Trail use a proactive system with torque-vectoring.All subcompact and compact crossovers do have a minor con, although it does not detract from the fact they remain great family vehicles. The taller stance does have an effect on the overall handling when compared to a lower-slung sedan.
