It was smiles all around as Toronto FC introduced the club’s newest Italian national team saviour Federico Bernardeschi to the local media on Monday afternoon.
However, the smile on the face of TFC president Bill Manning evaporated in a millisecond when he was asked if the arrival of Bernardeschi — as well as the two other Serie A stars with TFC, Lorenzo Insigne and Domenico Criscito — has come in time to salvage the 2022 MLS season for the club.
Manning said his club as absorbed short-term pain this season for, hopefully, long-term gain. But, still, he’s hoping that somehow, with the three Italian stars in the lineup, TFC can pull off a minor miracle and qualify for the post-season. “Federico did a little bit of training today with a small group on the field. We’ll see how he feels,” Bradley said. “Lorenzo is still training on the side but we’re hopeful in the next day or two he’ll be joining the group and as we get toward the end of the week, we’ll know. We want to get them both on the field as quickly as possible but it has to be done in the smart way.
The team prez said that the club still has some cap room to make another key acquisition — most likely to shore up the back line. But as far as adding a third Designed Player, that might not happen until the winter transfer window.
