He finished that campaign with 44 goals in 46 games overall, and was top of the goalscoring charts in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
After Monday night, the 34-year-old is now the oldest player to win the award since Stanley Matthews did in 1956. Despite having a prolific career, Benzema has had to endure a long wait for the Ballon d'Or, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi having dominated the award since 2008, winning 12 titles between them.
Having finally got his hands on the prestigious accolade this week, the France striker has revealed that he never gave up on winning it despite being in his thirties.. "There was a difficult period when I wasn't in the French team but I never gave up. "It wasn't easy, it was a difficult time for my family as well."
