Three players from the Benoni Indians baseball team, Damon King, Rowan Ebersohn, and Brandon Bouillon, have been selected to represent South Africa in the World Baseball Classic qualifiers. The qualifiers will take place in Taipei, Taiwan, from February 21 to 25, with a crucial mission to secure a spot in the main tournament next year. The prestigious World Baseball Classic 2024 will be hosted by the USA, Japan, and Puerto Rico from March 5 to 17.
South Africa's 28-man squad, featuring these experienced Benoni Indians players, aims to qualify for the tournament for the first time since 2009. The Benoni Indians organization expressed their congratulations to the selected players and extended their best wishes to the entire South African team. They acknowledged this opportunity as a significant moment for South African baseball. The team's last participation in the World Baseball Classic was in 2009, following their debut in the inaugural tournament in 2006. They unfortunately missed the 2013, 2017, and 2023 editions.The qualifiers in Taipei will see World number two Chinese Taipei, Nicaragua, Spain, and South Africa vying for two coveted spots at the Taipei Dome. Meanwhile, in Arizona, USA, at the Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium, another group of contenders – Brazil, Germany, Colombia, and China – will battle for the remaining two qualification spots. The four successful teams from these qualifiers will join the sixteen teams already qualified for the main tournament, including the host nations, USA, and the defending champions, Japan.
