The Government has refused to be drawn on whether benefits will go up in line with inflation in April 2023

This is despite the previous chancellor, Rishi Sunak, saying they would be uprated by this September’s Consumer Prices Index – likely to exceed 10 per cent – subject to a review by the Work and Pensions secretary. The issue is provoking widespread criticism from charities and campaigners, particularly after the Government announced tax-cutting measures to grow the economy.

“I never used to be a political person, but I am now because I just feel it’s so unfair. It’s just going back to the dark ages. We need a Robin Hood.” “It’s so expensive. It was £500 for the last delivery and, in the winter months, that just doesn’t last very long. It only lasts about three months, even if you’re careful,” she said.

Responding to the Government’s spending plans, she said ministers “should start at the bottom to help those in most need”.
