Jim Benning didn’t play the simulator or take a lucky charm to the NHL draft lottery Tuesday in Toronto.
The Vancouver Canucks general manager was hoping that despite long odds of securing a top-three selection in setting the first-round selection order June 21 at Rogers Arena, that the hockey gods would finally smile on a franchise that will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next season. The Canucks actually dropped from their No.9 position for the 2019 draft where they had a 48.8 per cent chance of staying in that spot, as opposed to a five per cent shot at the first pick, 5.
The Canucks could have four high-scoring forwards from that program — Alex Turcotte, Trevor Zegras, Matthew Boldy and Cole Caufield — to consider, or continue to prop the back end by taking right-shot Swedish defenceman Victor Soderstrom.A sequence of four numbers was assigned to each non-playoff team — and Colorado which owns Ottawa’s first pick — and clubs with better odds received more sequences.
Fifteen numbered balls were entered into a machine and four pulled out. The order of retrieval was compared with a chart with possible outcomes to determine the first pick. Balls were then re-entered and the process was repeated to determine second and third-overall picks. Once the top-three picks were determined, remainder of the first round goes in order. No team could fall further than three spots.
