The family of a legendary publican have paid tribute to the ‘man of action’ after his tragic passing.
Married on his birthday on July 21, 1978, Mr McDonagh and wife Denise were due to celebrate the joint occasion this Friday. Mr McDonagh raised his three children to be independent and encouraged them to ‘make their own way in the world as he did’.“He was probably also somewhat of a secret romantic at heart for he chose to get married on his birthday - perhaps signalling to those around him that marrying my mother was like taking her as part of himself.
His son shared: “When his mother-in-law was dying of cancer, the same thing that took him too early from life, my dad gave up his bed and slept on a mattress in his living room so that she could end her days being cared for by her daughter.
