A suspect has been charged in connection to a sweeping rash of desecrations of hundreds of gravestones at two Belleville cemeteries.

Belleville Police say a 20-year-old Stirling-Rawdon woman identified legally only as “Wild” was arrested Jan. 13 and charged with three counts of mischief over $5,000 in connection to the November 2021 acts of vandalism in local cemeteries.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“Police would like to thank members of the public and the Ontario Centre of Forensic Science for their assistance in solving this case,” city police said in a press release Tuesday morning. The arrests follow a sense of shock and outrage that rippled through Quinte at the time of the incidents as word spread that two Belleville cemeteries were defaced with spray paint.
