'If all goes to plan, come January I shall be fat, hungover and furious with my family. Hardly the time to resolve to hit the gym, dry out my liver and make more time for my mum.'
In summer I like eating salad and going outside. In summer I like trying new things. In January I like kicking back next to my sad lamp and eating left over chocolate coins. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s just the way it is.
We spend so much time punishing ourselves for not being good enough and I’m not going to let something silly like a new year make me any more punitive than I have to be. This year I intend to let self-improvement roll off my psyche like water off a duck’s back. Having fought hard this year to stay happy in the face of 2017, I plan to carry on just as I am.
This year, I say we give ourselves a head start, embrace the inevitable and do what we’re supposed to do in January. Take to our beds like Victorian women with a red wine and a left over sandwich until it gets light outside again. January is just a continuation of December. Let’s kick off New Year when the sun comes out.1.) I will drink less. Dry January has surely got to be a joke. Who doesn’t need a Bloody Mary on New Years Day?3.) I will catch up with old friends.
4.) I will be nicer to my parents. This is impossible. I am already booked to go on a family holiday which will end with fantasising about burying them at sea. 5.) I will be more cultural. You have used Aunt Jane’s V & A membership once to see Pink Floyd. Enough said.
