I always knew I was Jamaican but didn’t know a single Jamaican person; adoption had cut me off from my community and I couldn’t see how I was ever going to get a chance to reconnect ✒️ Vik Fielder for ipaperviews
How being forcibly adopted by a white family in the 70s almost destroyed my sense of self
When faced with racism like that from within your first family, how does anyone really stand a chance? I was just a baby when I embarked on my adoption journey, a journey which many liken to a rollercoaster. To me, that cliché doesn’t even come close to describing the actual transracial adoptee experience.
We don’t take kittens away from their mothers at that age, because they fail to thrive if we do. A baby for some reason is viewed differently. Yet, due to that decision, the course of my life changed. My birth certificate was voided, my medical records sealed, and new documents issued with my new adopted name on. It’s that easy to legally remove someone’s identity utterly, completely and irrevocably., I was moved to Somerset, hardly the most ethnically diverse community in the country.
It may not seem like much but black hair needs very particular care, and black children adopted by white parents often have to learn how to care for their hair through a system of trial and error. Growing up in a white community meant there weren’t any hairdressers specialising in black hair. I had mine cut short my entire childhood because it’s all my adoptive parents knew how to do. The same can be said of skincare.
