Shilese Jones’s return from injury, Sunisa Lee’s continued ascent will be among the top story lines to watch in the final competition before the Paris Games.
Building the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team is simple at first. Simone Biles, widely considered the best gymnast ever, is the obvious first pick. She has beenat world championships last fall. So long as she’s healthy, there is virtually no chance she does not compete in Paris.
A team that includes Biles, Jones, Lee and Blakely would be very strong on bars, but it probably would need a gymnast who could contribute on floor. The selection committee members would need to decide if they want to maximize the team score with the best available option on floor, or if they are willing to sacrifice a couple of tenths in favor of a gymnast who is strong on floor and also could step in on several other apparatuses.
Chiles, however, had falls at nationals on floor and on beam . She has been consistently excellent on bars, but if Biles, Jones, Lee and Blakely are on the team, the United States already has plenty of options on that apparatus.
