Rio Ferdinand's previous claim that fellow Manchester United legend David Beckham will bid to stage a takeover at their old club might be boosted by the eagerness of Rory McIlroy to potentially join a consortium.
The links involving Beckham first appeared after ex-England teammate Ferdinand claimed that his old colleague was weighing up heading up a consortium with a view to investing in the club. Speaking on his "Vibe with Five" podcast, Ferdinand explained how the former United hero could form a bid, saying: "Becks will come with a consortium.
Beckham has already hinted that he has not had any talks over putting together a takeover bid for Manchester United, telling CNBC earlier this month: "At the moment there's been no discussion. I have had a long-standing relationship with Qatar because of my involvement with PSG, but there's been no discussion at the moment."
He has previously formed part of a £173million strategic investment in the Alpine F1 team via the consortium Otro Capital, with his partners in this enterprise including boxer Anthony Joshua. Furthermore, the 34-year-old has made no secret of his desire to potentially invest in the Old Trafford giants.
