Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
Bearington’s journey to the Arizona Humane Society truly has not been an easy one. The German Shepherd mix was rescued by AHS Emergency Animal Medical Technicians in June after he was found wandering the sweltering streets of Phoenix as an injured stray. Matted and limping, sweet Bear would sweetly give his paw even as he was receiving medical treatment in the shelter’s animal trauma hospital.
You can become one of those proud owners by adopting Peanut, a 7-year-old who was adopted as a kitten from Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue and whose owner recently passed away. Once at AHS, the 1-year-old Boxer was found to be quite healthy and just needed her spay surgery. Since being cleared for adoption, adorable Daisy has been adopted and unfortunately returned twice due to her people being unable to give her the lifestyle that she needs.
