The B.C. General Employees\u0027 Union and the B.C. government are at a standstill in contract negotiations
The B.C. General Employees’ Union and the B.C. government are at a standstill in negotiations. Instead, the two sides met last week to hash out essential-service levels and the extent of job action that is permitted by law.
The government says no strike or service reduction can happen until an agreement is reached on what are considered essential services. As the union notes, the definition of an essential service in the context of labour law is different from what was deemed essential during the pandemic.Article content
The BCGEU must also give 72 hours notice before any action can begin. That could come soon based on the lack of progress on a deal. “Government respects the hardworking members of B.C.’s public sector and we believe that agreements will be reached through the collective bargaining process. The Public Service Agency remains open to resuming bargaining when the union’s bargaining committee wishes to do so,” said a government spokesperson.
