In video footage posted on social media of the apparent arrest, several police officers can be seen pinning a man to the ground before dragging him to his feet and taking him away
Police have used pepper spray on protestors during ongoing demonstrations against strict Covid measures A BBC journalist was “beaten and kicked” by police during his arrest in China amid ongoing protests against the country’s strict Covid-19 lockdown measures.
Ed Lawrence, a senior journalist and camera operator for the BBC’s China Bureau, was working as an accredited journalist covering the demonstrations when the incident took place.: “The BBC is extremely concerned about the treatment of our journalist Ed Lawrence, who was arrested and handcuffed while covering the protests in Shanghai. He was held for several hours before being released. During his arrest, he was beaten and kicked by the police.
“It is very worrying that one of our journalists was attacked in this way whilst carrying out his duties. We have had no official explanation or apology from the Chinese authorities, beyond a claim by the officials who later released him that they had arrested him for his own good in case he caught Covid from the crowd. We do not consider this a credible explanation.”understands the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office is in contact with authorities in China.
