Manchester United are edging towards completing a deal for Matthijs de Ligt but the Dutchman already has his critics
Manchester United are on the verge of ticking off two more gaps in their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
There is a general consensus that Mazraoui will be a good acquisition for the Reds considering his talent at right-back and his ability to cover on the left too. However, De Ligt's impending arrival has been met with a mixed response.The most negative reaction to the news of the Dutchman's signing has come from Paul Scholes. On the most recent episode of The Overlap's Fan Debate, the 49-year-old shared his concern about De Ligt joining the United ranks.
"When you’re bringing in players for £40m-£50m just because he’s played for him two or three years ago. Juventus got rid of him, he wasn’t good enough there and he obviously hasn’t been good enough at Bayern Munich. In 2022/23, De Ligt finished runner-up in Bayern's player of the year competition behind Jamal Musiala, an award which is chosen by the fans. While it is right that De Ligt did not play as much as he would have liked last season at the Allianz Arena, this speaks more towards Thomas Tuchel's management than perhaps his ability.
