Company faces 11,200 US cases over weedkiller Roundup and has been ordered to pay $78.5m to one claimant

The boss of German chemicals giant Bayer insists its multibillion-dollar takeover of Monsanto is a “good idea”, despite huge legal costs piling up over its Roundup weedkiller.

Monsanto was initially ordered to pay $289m to Dewayne Johnson, before the damages were reduced to $78.5m.The company suffered a new setback in March as a US jury ruled that Roundup was a “substantial factor” in another case brought by an amateur gardener who was suffering from cancer. Bayer has also pointed to findings from regulators around the world, especially in advanced economies such as the US, Europe and Canada, and reams of scientific studies as proof of the safety of its product.
