Applications to turn the former Fry's Electronics store into a housing development signal the abandonment of former plans to create a massive tech campus.
The building that once housed San Jose's iconic Mayan temple-themed Fry's Electronics store could become a massive housing development, the San Jose Mercury News first reported. Bay West Development submitted two different applications for a housing project at the site last week, city records show. The two proposals include a 1,233-unit complex and another complex with 519 multifamily units.
Maps and designs included in the application for the project's first variation show the residential units split into four five-story apartment buildings separated by pool areas, courtyards and landscaped promenades. The second variation's map shows rows of single housing units that occupy most of the property, similar to a suburban subdivision, with one pool and courtyard area in the site's northwest corner and a park.
