Batgirl director Bilall Fallah detailed how he tried to save footage from the canceled DC movie. 'I went on the server... Everything was gone.'
The Batgirl co-director Bilall Fallah recalls desperately trying to salvage footage from the film using his phone. Originally set for an HBO Max debut, the project would have debuted Leslie Grace as the titular character, Barbara Gordon. Batgirl was going to premiere this year until Warner Bros. unexpectedly pulled the plug on the project while it was in the midst of post-production.
Since making its shocking move, Warner Bros. and its bold business and creative choices have been the talk of the industry. Everyone from Fallah to his co-director Adil El Arbi and stars like Leslie Grace have opened up about the cancellation, expressing their disappointment in seeing Batgirl canceled. They also spoke of the their unforgettable time on the film and now, new details come to light as the filmmakers' attempt to save their work, even if it isn't completely finished.
"No, we have nothing. Adil called and told me, 'Go ahead! Shoot everything on your phone!' I went on the server... Everything was gone. We were [like]... 'F**ing shit!'... We did not [even] keep [the scenes] with Batman in it." The cancelation of Batgirl was only the beginning of a string of cancelations from Warner Bros. as part of their shift in strategy to focus on creating films on the big screen. It was emphasized that the decision to pull the plug from the film had nothing to do with its quality or the performances of its actors. Fallah reiterated this again, which would have been a great motivator for fans to demand that the project ultimately be released. After all, this approach worked on Warner Bros.
Fallah's new story just makes the whole ordeal much worse. It's one thing to know that his film will never be released to the public, but it's another to find out that it is now totally gone forever. Unless Warner Bros. have a backup copy, it's safe to say that it squashes any hopes of seeing what the filmmakers have shot for Batgirl.
