'Bats have been flying in the living quarters.'
Truckee Meadows Station 30, on Old Highway 395 between Reno and Carson City, Nevada, announced on Tuesday that it's closing for an undermined period of time due to a bat infestation.
"Bats have been flying in the living quarters and dead bats have been found in the apparatus bay," the department said in aThe Station 30 building dates back the 1950s. Its closure is needed due to the health and safety risks posed by bats, the department says."In addition to rabies, there are several other viruses that bats transmit to humans," the statement read."A human need not be bitten or scratched to contract it.
Five people died of rabies in the U.S. in 2021, with bats being responsible for on average 7 out of 10 rabies deaths,This is the second time the building has been shuttered due to bats in the last seven years.
