The school boards’ unit of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, will engage in open bargaining as it tries to hammer out a contract with the provincial government and school board associations.

In an unusual move, the school boards unit of the Canadian Union of Public Employees will engage in open bargaining — where what happens during talks is publicly shared with members — as it tries to hammer out a contract with the provincial government and school board associations.

That means “moving forward, we will be able to share with our stakeholders and community partners what exactly is happening and I think that is beneficial for everyone involved … workers are the unions and workers deserve to know what’s happening,” Walton said. Walton said the sides agreed on which issues would be discussed provincially — typically big money items — and which can be bargained between union locals and individual school boards in the province’s two-tier system. That means both levels of talks can start this summer, before contracts expire at the end of August.

The four big teacher unions are also set to meet with the province and school boards this week or early next. Major issues are expected to include wages, especially given the rising cost of living, as well as staffing in schools.
