FC Barcelona started their UEFA Champions League campaign with a disappointing 2-1 loss to AS Monaco on Thursday night. The Catalan giants were reduced to ten men early in the match after Eric Garcia's red card, and despite Lamine Yamal's equalizing goal, Monaco secured the victory thanks to George Ilenikhena's late strike.

Barcelona did pull themselves level in the 28th minute when 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who cut in from the right and unleashed a lovely low strike from the edge of the box. After a goalless first half, the Serie A side were afforded the chance to open the scoring after being awarded a penalty on 50 minutes. Mateo Retegui stepped and saw his spot-kick saved by Raya, who also kept out the rebound effort.
Alex Grimaldo doubled the lead before Wirtz added another and Timon Wellenreuther put he ball through his own net on the stroke of halftime.Atletico Madrid rallied from behind to secure a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig at the Estádio Cívitas Metropolitano.
