The Barbie film has made $502.6 million since its release three weeks ago, which is officially the highest-grossing film by a female director domestically.
Greta Gerwig's latest creation beat Frozen II domestically, which had a female co-director. The Disney sequel is still the highest-grossing film internationally. The Super Mario Bros. Movie remains the highest-grossing film overall in the domestic box office this year by $70 million.During the third week of the film's release, it earned $40 million. It had the best opening weekend in terms of domestic box office sales.
Vietnam banned the movie, and China nearly followed suit due to a controversy over a map depiction in one scene that appeared to show the “nine-dash line,” a cartographic feature Beijing uses to exert its unlawful territorial claims over most of the South China Sea. As a result, Barbie came in sixth place in opening-day ticket sales in China.
