While Barbie continues to climb the box office rankings for the year, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav has teased the Barbie max streaming date.
According to Zaslav during the company’s recent Q2 earnings call, the Barbie Max streaming date is tentatively set for sometime this fall, when the feature will arrive on the streaming service. The reason for the slightly longer wait, according to Zaslav, is simply how well the move is doing during its theatrical run.
“We really believe in the motion picture window — let it play out. . .go into PVOD, take it through the windows that have worked forever [in the business],” Zaslav said . “When it goes on Max, it will have a good impact in the fall.” In Deadline’s report, they note that Barbie is currently projected to cross the $400 million mark at the domestic box office on Thursday. Doing so in only 14 days would leapfrog it over both Top Gun: Maverick and The Super Mario Bros. Movie to the milestone, both of which took 18 days to hit $400 million in the U.S.
Globally, Barbie is set to cross the $1 billion milestone over the weekend or on Monday, with total projections placing the film at somewhere around $1.3 billion by the time its theatrical run has ended.
