The South African team outfoxed title holders Nigeria 2-1 in their opening match and outplayed Burundi to win 3-1 last week. Banyana ensured they finished as winners of group C with a 1-0 win over neighbours Botswana on Sunday.

“I think the training session went well and we worked on a few things that we intend doing during the game against Tunisia,” Banyana coach Desiree Ellis said ahead of the match at Stade Prince Moulay Al Hassan stadium on Thursday evening. Kickoff is at 10pm South African time.

Banyana advanced to the last eight with a 100% winning streak, having won their three group stage matches. The only other team to manage this feat are hosts Morocco. But Banyana will face an uphill battle against the north Africans. The four winners of the quarterfinal matches automatically qualify for the 2023 Fifa World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Thembi is a big blow but it is an opportunity for someone else to make the step up. We selected the squad for every eventuality but we didn’t expect this, and now the versatility has got to come through. But what I saw in training today was encouraging.“It’s the big one. It’s a quarterfinal and there is no second chance. This is the game where you’ve got to give it your all to make sure that we reach our objective, which is obviously to qualify for the World Cup,” said Ellis.
