Banyana Banyana finally crowned African champions

The 2-1 win over hosts Morocco made South Africa the third nation – after nine-time champions Nigeria and two-time winners Equatorial Guinea – to lay their hands on African women’s football’s Holy Grail.

The goals injected some extra energy into South Africa’s play even though Banyana almost threw it away in the closing stages by allowing Morocco to pull one back with 10 minutes remaining. In the days leading up to the final, the team’s head coach, Desiree Ellis, was named CAF coach of the year, while Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies bagged the CAF interclub team of the year at the awards ceremony held in Rabat on Thursday. The on-field occasion on Saturday night was a culmination of what had been a good tournament for the two finalists from the opposite ends of the continent.

However, the final presented the ultimate stage to determine who between the two sides was Africa’s best, and Banyana prevailed.
