Phil Maloney was busy getting ready for the launch of Cape Coffee, a new sister company of the wildly popular Bannerman Brewing Co., but took some time to answer the Telegram's 20 Questions.
I dropped out of business school, many years ago. I dropped out of business school, joined a band, did that for a dozen years, better part of a decade. It was all the travelling and seeing what's outside of the province, it was all that traveling that led to this place, really, at the end of the day.That's a tough one, because there have been so many great years in the band days, and obviously 2019, opening this place was massive.

The band announced in the fall of 2017 it was taking an indefinite hiatus. - Scott BlackburnI mean, I really enjoy coffee and beer — that's why this place is open. But you know, also trying to watch intakes, both in terms of anxiety with coffee — drinking too much coffee a day — and obviously, you don't want to be drinking every day either.
Let me just see what I'm listening to [takes out phone]. Really digging Bill Callahan. He just put out a new record that's recent. Andy Shauf. Great to just chill, throw it on. I really love Deerhoof. They're one of my favourite bands. Great drummer. Black Midi has been another band that's been really taking my attention lately.Typically, after long days here, it's just throwing something on. I wish I read more books. I found when I was travelling, I read more books.
I've been playing backgammon recently. Super fun. Really getting into that. Photography too. That's always been a thing that I've been at, but I've been recently getting more into film photography and developing ... and building that LP collection too, throwing records on.
