BALI — An international beach sporting event may be the latest victim of Bali’s hardline anti-Israel stance, after the island’s governor made plain over the weekend that he would not welcome Israeli teams to compete.

On Friday, Mr Raja met with Mr Koster and the country’s sports minister Dito Ariotedjo to iron out differences and ensure that the World Beach Games, which bring together 1,600 athletes from 130 countries, goes ahead. Mr Koster said his view was consistent with Indonesia’s long standing opposition to what it deems to be Israel’s mistreatment of Palestinians.

The 2023 ANOC World Beach Games is the second iteration of the event following its 2019 inaugural run in Qatar.
