Opinion | Baleka Mbete has aptly shown she cannot preside impartially over parliament

This is not the first time she has displayed her partisan nature. Before the 2014 general elections, Mbete was quoted as saying she would not have formed an ad hoc committee on the Nkandla issue had she been in her predecessor’s shoes. It is patently clear that Mbete’s actions place her consistently squarely at odds with the characteristic traits of accountability, diligence and transparency required from a speaker of the national assembly.
It is the speaker’s mandate and constitutional obligation to ensure that parliament keeps the executive in check and provides workable solutions to crises confronting the nation, in the best interests of the 57-million South Africans we represent. From a parliamentary perspective the solutions revolve around fast-tracking the DA’s independent system and market operator bill, which will break up Eskom into a generation entity that can be privatised and a state-owned entity that will control the grid linked to distribution and transmission.
