Sam Bankman-Fried has been arrested by the police in the Bahamas after receiving formal notification from the US over criminal charges against the fallen crypto entrepreneur.
«As a result of the notification received and the material provided therewith, it was deemed appropriate for the Attorney General to seek [Bankman-Fried’s] arrest and hold him in custody pursuant to our nation’s Extradition Act,» according to the office of the Bahamas Attorney General Ryan Pinder.The police arrest by notification from US authorities marks a sharp turn from earlier this week when US senators offered for Bankman-Fried to testify before Congress.
«He has declined in an unprecedented abdication of accountability,» according to a joint statement on Monday by the committee’s chair Sherrod Brown and ranking member Pat Toomey, adding that two dates and a virtual option for testimony have been offered. «Given that Bankman-Fried’s counsel has stated they are unwilling to accept service of a subpoena, we will continue to work to have him appear before the Committee. He owes the American people an explanation.»
