Cleveland leaders want railroad operators to answer for crumbling bridges, rusting support beams, and hazardous, eyesore conditions throughout the city.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – with railroads, who, they say, ignore or drag their feet on requests for repairs.Dealer photographer surveyed roughly 20 railroad properties around the city last week.
Some bridges had aesthetic issues, like peeling paint and graffiti. But others sported cracked and crumbling concrete and steel beams covered in rust. Other bridges had trees or vines growing atop them. One bridge, with a deformed piece of steel, appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. Council members last week gave example after example of railroad properties in their wards that they fear are unsafe. Councilwoman Jenny Spencer, who organized council’s hearing in response to the East Palestine derailment, described toa battle in recent years in the Edgewater neighborhood, over a railroad bridge on Lake Avenue.
