Backlund as great as he's ever been – and maybe better yyc Flames
“He’s our leader night-in and night-out.”It can be a little awkward to talk about individual accomplishments when your team is outside of the post-season picture. The Flames as a whole have underachieved this season but still believe they have a shot at getting hot coming down the stretch. But if the Flames as a whole have struggled to live up to expectations, the same cannot be said of Backlund.
With 44 points in 67 games heading into Tuesday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes, he’s on-pace to hit 53 points this season, which would tie his career-high set back in 2016-’17. The clip he’s set over the past 20, though, should see him set a new personal best.Article content Backlund’s also one of the Flames’ key penalty killers and has spent a lot of time on the power-play, too.“I feel like it’s been one of my better seasons, for sure,” Backlund admitted after his two-point performance against the Sens. “2016-’17 was a breakout season for me, but I feel like I’ve matured over the years and this year I feel like I took another step in my game.”That’s something that Flames head coach Darryl Sutter traces back to last year.
It sure seems like Backlund has done just that, and if he stays hot coming down the stretch it should see him set a career-high in points. He has 18 points in his last 20 games prior to Tuesday, so continue producing at that clip for the Flames’ final 15 games and he’ll sail past his previous high. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.
Backlund is way more concerned with that playoff spot than he is with setting new career-high numbers, as you might expect.
