U.S. citizens turning to B.C. pharmacies for Ozempic drug are driving shortages, health minister says

U.S. citizens have tapped into a pipeline for Ozempic, a medication for diabetes that has been popularized on social media for weight loss, using pharmacies in British Columbia on the signature of a Nova Scotia physician, B.C.’s health minister says.

Demand for Ozempic has driven shortages of the medicine for diabetic people in the United States, and Drug Shortages Canada now indicates a national shortage of the one milligram format of the prescription medication. Mr. Dix said his government will limit the sale or dispensing of Ozempic to non-Canadian residents, to ensure that Canadian patients with Type 2 diabetes can access it. He is also asking the province’s regulatory colleges for doctors and pharmacists to ensure that anyone dispensing Ozempic is compliant with the product’s approved use. Weight loss is a side-effect of Ozempic, but it is not approved for use as a weight loss treatment.
