B.C. will begin a three-year decriminalization experiment, allowing drug users 18 and over to carry up to 2.5 grams of opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA. It’s an experiment that’s likely to influence drug policy across Canada.
VANCOUVER—On Tuesday, British Columbia will begin a three-year decriminalization experiment, allowing drug users 18 and over to carry a up to 2.5 grams of opioids, such as heroin and fentanyl, as well as cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA.
Bennett said, though there is still much to learn about the impacts of decriminalization, the hope is it will ultimately save lives. “We’ve been in conversation with federal and territorial partners, and there’s certainly other provinces monitoring what’s happening in B.C. … B.C.’s perspective will be shared broadly and happily across the rest of the country,” he said at a Monday technical briefing.
Jennifer Saxe, director general for Health Canada, told the Star during the Monday briefing that Health Canada is continuing to work on reviewing that request from Toronto Public Health. “The implementation will be rigorously monitored to look at progress toward outcomes,” and there will also be an independent peer-reviewed evaluation, she said.
