B.C. households were subject to evictions or “forced to move” more than in any other Canadian province, according to the latest data from the Canadian Housing Survey, conducted by Statistics Canada.
The report indicated that 3.6 per cent of B.C. households — just over 75,000 families — had been forced to move from their homes by landlords, banks or the government, in the five years prior to 2021.in the 2021 Census.
“In most, if not all other provinces, eviction proceedings are initiated by a landlord filing something with the governing agency,” said Zuzan Modrovic, a legal advocate with B.C.’s Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre . The provincial agency would then decide if an eviction notice can proceed, based on information provided by the landlord.Article content
“In the city of Vancouver, over 50 per cent of renters are in the secondary market,” said Andy Yan, director of SFU’s City Program. He noted that the relatively informal system of basement suites so common in B.C. was “a lot more difficult to regulate.” Roughly two per cent of households in Ontario and Quebec were evicted in the five years prior to 2021, significantly lower than B.C.’s 3.6 per cent.
