San Diego State playmaker, who ranks eighth all-time at SDSU in receptions (174), will test himself at next level rather than return for super senior season

Matthews’ father, Tom Matthews, is a certified agent, and the family has gathered information from scouts and coaches in recent weeks and months to assess Jesse’s professional prospects.

“It got complicated during the season, just with a lack of production and some frustrations. I did think about the possibility of coming back and what that would look like, but as I talked to my family more and some reliable sources, I got the feeling that I should declare this year and take this momentum that I have into the draft and see where it gets me.”

“I think I’ve opened enough eyes to give me an opportunity , but there’s still some doubts,” Matthews said. “I’m OK with that. I was doubted coming out of high school. I was doubted when I first got to SDSU. Matthews was a one-man highlight show in SDSU’s Frisco Bowl victory over UTSA, collecting 11 receptions for 175 yards and two touchdowns. The most memorable moment was an acrobatic 20-yard touchdown in which he made a diving stretch to reach the pylon at the goal line.

“The fans that have embraced me,” Matthews said, “I felt so much love from people I don’t even know, like random people reaching out to me on social media and saying I inspired them.
