San Diego State faces an improved UNLV team that has lost three straight games, although the Rebels are getting back starting quarterback Doug Brumfield
For the second straight week, San Diego State meets a team that is welcoming back its starting quarterback from injury.
SDSU opened Sunday as a 9-point favorite against UNLV , although that was trimmed to 61/2 points with news of Brumfield’s return.UNLV opened the season with four wins in five games, providing optimism the Rebels would be eligible for just their second bowl appearance in the 21st century. Third-year head coach Marcus Arroyo, the offensive coordinator at Oregon before being hired three years ago at UNLV, has the Rebels headed in the right direction.
UNLV went through a stretch, Arroyo said, where “we ran into a little bit of a rut here, where we were losing a lot of our explosion and a lot of our chemistry and our production. ...” UNLV junior running back Aidan Roberts also is listed as a starter on the depth chart after missing time with a knee injury suffered against Air Force.Robbins forms a solid 1-2 punch with junior running back Courtney Reese .UNLV’s top two wide receivers — sophomore Ricky White and junior Kyle Williams also have been dealing with injuries that make their participation questionable this week.The most striking statistic for UNLV’s defensive unit is that it has picked off a dozen passes this season.
